Picula: The situation in Serbia has become worrying, there will be an even more difficult period

According to Tonino Picula of the European Parliament, the current political and social climate in Serbia presents considerable concerns, marked by an observable increase in violence compared to the previous year. Speaking during a podcast, Picula indicated that the pre-election atmosphere, particularly following recent statements from President Aleksandar Vučić regarding potential resignation, suggests that the country is heading toward an even more challenging period. Picula highlighted that the political landscape has seen President Vučić himself entering the contest for the prime ministerial position.

He characterized the overall situation in Serbia as one of profound instability, noting that the nation has endured an “extraordinary state of uncertainty” spanning a year and a half. This period of tension was notably linked to the fatal incident at the Novi Sad railway station, which resulted in the loss of 16 lives. The assessment provided by Picula suggests that these underlying pressures are likely to persist.

He concluded that the current trajectory points toward heightened polarization within the country. Consequently, he advised that both the ruling party and the presidency are expected to exert an even greater level of effort to manage the escalating political tensions. The remarks underscore a growing concern among European observers regarding the stability of the nation’s governance amid escalating internal divisions.
