Polish President removes highest state decoration from Zelensky

The President of Poland has taken action to strip the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, of the “White Eagle Order,” which constitutes Poland’s highest state decoration. According to Polish President Karol Nawrocki, the decision was made based on specific criteria and is not intended to target the Ukrainian populace or alter Poland’s overarching strategic security policy. Nawrocki emphasized that the action does not signal a change in Poland’s commitment, stating, “We have supported and continue to support Ukraine.”

The stated justification for removing the honor relates to President Zelenskyy’s decision to name a special unit within the Ukrainian Armed Forces after figures associated with the “UPA heroes,” or the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

This naming has generated controversy, particularly because, within Poland, members of the UPA have been accused of involvement in the Holocaust. The Polish official reiterated that the removal of the decoration was a specific response to this naming convention and was carefully framed to clarify Poland’s diplomatic stance. He stressed that the decision was not directed against the Ukrainian people.

The Polish president maintained that the fundamental strategic direction of Poland’s security policy remains unchanged despite the revocation of the honor.
