Porsche is making a significant transition in its endurance racing program, moving away from the Cayman model that has served as its primary vehicle in the GT4 category since 2016. For the 2027 season, the automaker plans to base its competitive efforts on the 911 for the first time, introducing the specialized 911 GT4 R. This new iteration represents a substantial upgrade for Porsche’s racing lineup.
The vehicle is powered by the engine derived from the 911 Cup, featuring a 4.0-liter, six-cylinder unit that generates 512 horsepower. The projected cost for this advanced racing machine is set at $375,000. The 911 GT4 R is scheduled to make its competitive debut next year, participating in major series such as the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and the SRO Pirelli GT4 America championships.
This shift marks a notable evolution for the brand’s racing efforts. Reflecting its commitment to the GT4 class over the past decade, Porsche has previously built more than 1,500 race models utilizing the Cayman platform. The introduction of the 911 signals a strategic shift in performance and engineering focus for the company’s motorsports endeavors.
