Qamili: The 2007 decision regarding street names was arbitrary; now we are resolving it according to the law.

The Deputy Mayor of Tetova Municipality, Albi Qamili, addressed the media regarding calls from opposition councilors for an emergency municipal council session. The core issue prompting the dispute is the Constitutional Court’s recent decision concerning the official names of streets and squares within Tetova. Opposition councilors have stated that the ruling constitutes an infringement upon Albanian identity, necessitating an immediate session to address the matter.

In his statement, Qamili offered a different perspective on the source of the controversy. He suggested that the actions surrounding the annulment of the naming conventions are orchestrated by entities including BDI and the Constitutional Court. Qamili further pointed to a previous ruling from 2007 concerning the naming of Albanian streets, which he characterized as a final decision previously made by BDI.

He noted that the current situation involves the registration of these names according to current legal frameworks, effectively nullifying the prior decision. The debate centers on the validity and implementation of these municipal names. The demand for an emergency meeting highlights a significant political disagreement over the legal status of place names in the region.

The differing interpretations of the constitutional decision and its practical effect on the established names of the municipality remain central to the ongoing political dialogue in Tetova.
