PDK Secretary General, Vlora Çitaku, addressed recent comments made by the Serbian Minister for Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Snezhana Paunović. Paunović had stated that she would conduct an ethnic cleansing of Kosovo if she were in the position held by Milloshević. In response, Çitaku asserted that these remarks indicate that the genocidal ideology within Serbia has not been defeated.
She argued that voices glorifying past atrocities continue to persist within various Serbian institutions. Çitaku emphasized that the statements reveal a problem extending beyond historical events. She stated, “When you hear a minister of the Serbian Government say that Serbia wanted to ethnically cleanse Kosovo in 1998, you understand that the problem is not just the past.” According to Çitaku, the core issue lies with an ideology that, she claimed, fueled genocide, massacres, and massive expulsions.
She further elaborated that the sentiment expressed suggests that perpetrators feel that enough violence or displacement has not yet occurred. Çitaku suggested that the mindset underlying these historical narratives implies that the objectives—such as killing, burning, or expelling populations—were incomplete. This commentary from a high-ranking Serbian official prompted Çitaku to characterize the persistent nature of this mindset as a continuing ideological challenge that requires addressing beyond mere historical recognition.
