Following protests in Tetovo, which were sparked by the Constitutional Court’s recent annulment of a 2007 decision concerning street names, the European Union Ambassador to Macedonia, Michalis Rokas, issued a statement addressing the situation. Ambassador Rokas clarified that the European Union supports the rulings issued by the Constitutional Court, recognizing it as the nation’s highest judicial authority. While affirming this support, Rokas also broadened the scope of necessary reforms for the country’s path toward European integration.
He stressed that addressing issues pertaining to ethnic groups is a critical component of this integration process. In his remarks, Rokas stated, “The Constitutional Court is the highest judicial authority in the state. It is essential that its decisions are implemented immediately.
This is what we support.” He further elaborated that maintaining the rule of law and managing matters involving ethnic groups are indispensable elements of European integration. Therefore, he expressed the expectation that domestic institutions must implement these principles consistently across all sectors of governance. The ambassador’s comments underscore the EU’s commitment to adherence to the rule of law while simultaneously highlighting the need for comprehensive societal reconciliation alongside judicial compliance.
