Sarajevo Marks Day of Remembrance for Children Killed During Siege
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina – On May 5th, the city of Sarajevo observed a day of mourning to commemorate the children killed during the 1992-1995 siege. The event, a significant period of conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulted in a devastating loss of life, particularly among the city’s young residents. Official figures indicate that 1,601 children were killed during the four-year siege of Sarajevo.
This tragic toll included at least 53 individuals confirmed to have been victims of sniper attacks, according to rulings from international and local courts. Furthermore, over 14,000 children sustained injuries throughout the conflict. Despite extensive investigations, accountability for crimes against children committed during the siege remains elusive.
The Sarajevo Canton Government established May 5th as the “Day of Remembrance for the Children of Sarajevo Killed” in 2019, recognizing the ongoing need for remembrance and justice. The Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina has long focused on documenting this period, preserving the memories of those children killed. The day serves as a solemn occasion for the city of Sarajevo to honor the victims and reflect on the enduring consequences of the conflict.
