Prosecutor Workload Remains High, According to IKD Research
Tirana – A recent analysis by the Institute for Justice (IKD), led by researcher Gzim Shala, indicates a significant workload burden for basic prosecutors within the Albanian legal system. The research, based on a direct examination of indictments and judgments within the Department of Serious Crimes and the General Division-Penal Department, highlights a concerning imbalance. Shala’s findings, developed in close collaboration with courts and prosecutors nationwide, reveal that the average prosecutor handles a substantial number of cases.
Specifically, the data indicates that prosecutors currently manage approximately 519 cases each. This high volume of cases raises concerns about the operational capacity of the prosecution service. The research utilized data from reports detailing the situation within these key departments.
While the specific details of the “negative balance” were not fully elaborated upon, the underlying issue centers around the relationship between the number of prosecutors and the number of pending cases. The analysis underscores the need for continued scrutiny of prosecutorial workloads and potential adjustments to resource allocation within the Albanian justice system. The research was conducted by Gzim Shala and the IKD.
