According to research firm IDC, smartphone shipments within China decreased by 4.3% in the second quarter, reaching 66 million units when compared to the same period last year. This marks the fifth consecutive quarterly decline in the market. Furthermore, overall shipments for the first half of the year experienced a year-over-year contraction of 4.2%.
Despite the general downturn, the market saw notable growth from two key players. Huawei Technologies and Apple were the only sellers to report increases during the quarter. Apple’s shipments rose by 24.4%, while Huawei recorded a 19.4% increase.
Arthur Guo, a senior analyst, attributed this performance divergence to pricing strategies. Guo stated that the stability in pricing implemented by Huawei and Apple provided a compelling incentive for consumers. He noted that this pricing consistency encouraged hesitant buyers to make purchases, even during a quarter when many other market indicators suggested consumers might prefer to wait for potential price reductions from competitors.
