The Ambassador of Albania to North Macedonia, Denion Meidani, announced that the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania has endorsed, in principle, a bilateral agreement with the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia. This agreement focuses on unifying and streamlining control procedures at the border crossing between the two nations. The proposed accord stipulates the establishment of common crossing points and the implementation of joint control activities.
The initial phase of this joint operational model is slated to take place at the Qafë Thana border crossing. Currently, since its inauguration in August 2023, Qafë Thana operates under a system that features a single physical stop point but maintains two parallel control procedures. Under this existing arrangement, border police officers from both countries are stationed within the same facility, with each officer processing travelers according to their respective national jurisdiction.
The objective of the new bilateral agreement is to transition the border management process beyond this current, dual-track logistical model. By unifying control procedures, the agreement aims to enhance efficiency and create a more integrated passage experience for travelers moving between Albania and North Macedonia. The formalization of these joint controls marks a significant step toward deepening cross-border cooperation between the governments of the two countries.
