Slovenia, Spain, and Ireland to Skip Eurovision Boycott
Slovenia, Spain, and Ireland will be omitting coverage of the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, continuing a boycott initiated over Israel’s participation in the music competition. The decision reflects ongoing concerns regarding the event’s organization and the inclusion of Israel as a participant. In Slovenia, viewers will instead have access to a curated selection of programming under the theme “The Voices of Palestine.” Slovenian Radio Television (SloTV) will broadcast a week-long series of films, documentaries, and programs focusing on Israeli activists advocating for Palestinian rights.
“We have a whole week of content and we are broadcasting Israeli activists fighting for the rights of Palestinians,” stated Natalija Gorscak, chairwoman of the board of directors of SloTV. She emphasized that the decision not to broadcast Eurovision is not intended as a condemnation of Jewish people but rather a response to the policies of the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Spanish national broadcaster, RTVE, has also confirmed its intention to refrain from broadcasting the Eurovision Song Contest.
Similar actions have been taken by broadcasters in Ireland, reflecting a coordinated stance against the event’s direction. This boycott continues a debate surrounding the competition’s relationship with geopolitical issues and the inclusion of specific nations.
