Kosovo’s Rise in Press Freedom Index Linked to Legal Decision, Says Reporter
Kosovo has climbed 15 positions in the annual Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, achieving a ranking of 84th globally as of April 30, 2026. The improvement reflects a notable advancement in the country’s media landscape. Speaking to Pressing on T7, Pavol Szalai, director of the Prague Bureau for Reporters Without Borders, attributed the primary driver of this shift to a recent decision by Kosovo’s Constitutional Court.
Szalai emphasized that the repeal of legislation impacting media independence was a key factor contributing to Kosovo’s enhanced standing. “There’s no reason to celebrate,” Szalai stated during the interview. “The change in ranking is directly linked to this specific legal development.”
The index evaluates press freedom conditions in 203 countries and territories.
