Ten new HIV cases in recent months, two deaths – voluntary testing increases

The incidence of HIV infection in Kosovo has shown an upward trend over the past two years, a pattern that continues into the first months of 2026. According to infectious disease specialists, the situation warrants continued monitoring, as the infection has resulted in two recorded deaths, often occurring when treatment is administered at advanced stages of the disease. As of the third week of May this year, the Infectious Diseases Clinic confirmed a total of 10 positive hiv/AIDS cases.

Furthermore, two patients are currently receiving care in the “A” ward of the facility. Hatixhe Gashi, an infectologist, noted that over the preceding five months, the clinic registered 10 new infections. Gashi emphasized that this figure represents an increase compared to previous years, noting that the year 2025 alone recorded 34 new cases, which he described as a high incidence rate.

The data suggests a persistent challenge in controlling the spread of the virus. While specific preventative measures and treatments are in place, the rising number of new cases highlights the need for enhanced public health interventions. The reporting of two fatalities underscores the seriousness of the ongoing epidemic.

Health authorities continue to track these statistics to better allocate resources and improve patient outcomes for those living with hiv.
