The ban of phones in American schools did not lead to improved results.

Study Finds Limited Impact of Smartphone Bans in Schools

A new study examining the effects of smartphone restrictions in schools suggests that bans may not represent a significant intervention. Research conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research is anticipated to conclude that mobile phone prohibitions have had a minimal impact on student academic performance. The study analyzed data from over 40,000 schools across the United States between 2019 and 2026.

Initial findings revealed a temporary surge in disciplinary incidents following the implementation of phone restrictions. Simultaneously, there was a short-term decline in reported student well-being. However, the long-term effects demonstrated a shift.

Over subsequent years, student well-being levels rebounded, and disciplinary measures associated with phones decreased. Crucially, the study found no statistically significant correlation between the bans and changes in test results. Researchers noted an initial disruption as schools adjusted to the new policies.

The data indicates that while immediate changes prompted increased monitoring and temporary challenges, sustained efforts to manage student behavior and support well-being ultimately proved more effective than the restrictions on phones themselves.
