The far-left is seeking to withdraw from NATO – the proposal for a referendum is rejected by the Spanish Parliament.

Spanish Parliament Rejects Proposal for NATO Referendum

Madrid, Spain – The Spanish Parliament rejected a proposal on Wednesday calling for a new public vote on Spain’s continued membership in NATO. The initiative, submitted by the left-wing extremist party Podemos, sought to revisit the issue previously considered in 1986, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Spain’s formal alliance with the transatlantic military organization. The proposal, titled “holding a referendum on continuing Spain’s membership in NATO,” faced widespread opposition.

The Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), the primary partner within the governing coalition, voted against the measure. Furthermore, the People’s Party (PP), Vox, the Basque National Party (PNV), Junts for Catalonia, and other opposition parties also voted against the proposal. Sumar, a smaller coalition partner, abstained from the vote.

Only E Ma supported the initiative. The rejection underscores the deeply divided opinions within the Spanish political landscape regarding Spain’s role within NATO. The proposal failed to garner sufficient support to pass, effectively ending consideration of a new referendum at this time.
