The Hungarian foreign minister acknowledged having phoned Lavrov of Russia during key EU meetings.

The Hungarian foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, has confirmed ongoing communication with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during private discussions on international affairs within the European Union. Previously, the Hungarian government had refuted these claims as fabricated reports. Over the weekend, The Washington Post detailed Szijjártó’s consistent contact with Lavrov throughout meetings held in Brussels, with the primary focus of these conversations revolving around holiday plans.

These allegations carry significant weight, given the EU’s requirement for honest cooperation among member states. The confidentiality of these meetings is also a crucial element of the situation. The European Commission issued a formal request for clarification from Hungary on Monday, labeling the reports as “concerning.”

Szijjártó addressed the situation while campaigning in Keszthely, Hungary.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining open channels of dialogue, despite the serious nature of the accusations leveled against him and his interactions with Sergei Lavrov. The Hungarian minister stressed the need to explore all avenues for peaceful resolution and continued engagement within the framework of the European Union.
