IKD Reports Highlight Prosecutorial Shortages Contributing to Court Backlog
PRISHTINA – The Kosovo Institute of Justice (IKD) has released two reports examining case backlogs within the Department of Serious Crimes and the General-Division Penal Department, according to reports by Ekonomia Online. The findings underscore a significant challenge facing the Kosovan judicial system: a shortage of prosecutors. Ehat Miftaraj, Executive Director of the IKD, stated that the current number of basic prosecutors in Kosovo is insufficient.
“We have observed a limited or small number of prosecutors in several prosecutors’ offices,” Miftaraj explained. The IKD’s reports detail the impact of this shortage on the processing of cases, including monitoring sessions and judicial judgments. To address this issue, the IKD has engaged in discussions with court presidents and the chief prosecutor.
These meetings, according to sources, focused on identifying strategies to alleviate the strain on the prosecutorial resources. The IKD’s reports serve as a key indicator of the ongoing pressure within the Kosovan legal system and highlight the need for increased investment in prosecutorial capacity.
