The matter was not decided in a government session. The harmonization of the new tobacco protection law continues.

The Tobacco Protection Law will not be presented at today’s government session. Instead, it will continue to gather feedback and perspectives from relevant stakeholders. Health Minister Azir Aliu clarified that he is currently working to establish coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We anticipated approval during this session, however, comprehensive coordination is now essential for the legislation’s progression,” he explained. “We require alignment with all relevant institutions before proceeding to a session specifically involving the Ministry of Agriculture.”

The minister emphasized the need for collaboration, noting that the Ministry of Agriculture possesses a law governing production, while the tobacco protection legislation addresses safeguarding the industry. “We are actively coordinating these efforts to ensure a cohesive approach,” Aliu stated.

Concerns have been raised by the tobacco industry, who argue that overly stringent restrictions within the draft law will not curb smoking rates, but rather stimulate increased consumption. This coordination is vital to the successful passage of the law through the government.
