The Public Defender visited the Shutka Prison; allegations of violence against inmates are being investigated.

The Public Defender, Faton Selami, conducted an official visit today to the Correctional-Improvement Institute – Skopje Prison in Shutkë. During the visit, Selami held separate meetings with the facility’s directors and with a group of inmates. A primary focus of the discussions involved inmate concerns regarding the use of force during recent institutional inspections.

The Public Defender’s Office confirmed that Selami, accompanied by members of the Civil Control Mechanism team, met with the prison director, Boban Utkovski, and deputy director Baki Mustafi. The objective of this meeting was to secure detailed information pertaining to the inspections carried out by personnel from the Prison Police Intervention Unit. This unit operates under the direct authority of the Directorate for the Execution of Sanctions.

In addition to meeting with the administration, the Public Defender engaged directly with several inmates present at the facility. This visit underscores the role of the public defender in overseeing correctional facilities. The actions taken by the public defender aim to ensure transparency and accountability within the prison system.

The engagement highlights the commitment of the defender’s office to investigate claims of misconduct and review the protocols governing the custody and treatment of individuals within the correctional setting.
