WHO Warns Potential Increase in Hantavirus Cases Following Tourist Ship Outbreak
Geneva – The World Health Organization (WHO) has cautioned that further cases of hantavirus may emerge in the coming weeks following a recent outbreak linked to the MV Hondius tourist ship. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed the situation at a press conference in Madrid, stating that while no imminent pandemic is anticipated, vigilance remains crucial. The outbreak, which began with cases identified on the ship last month, has tragically resulted in three deaths among passengers.
A total of 85 passengers and 35 crew members have been affected by the rare, but fatal, illness. Hantavirus is transmitted through rodent contact and typically presents with a long incubation period. Despite the absence of immediate pandemic indicators, Mr.
Ghebreyesus emphasized the potential for further cases. “And given the long incubation period of the virus, it is possible to see more cases in the coming weeks.” The WHO continues to monitor the situation closely and is advising public health authorities to remain prepared. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact source and spread of the virus.
There is a concern that more cases could be identified.
