Kosovo Union Leader Declares “Battle Lost” Over Workplace Safety Following Worker Fatalities
Kosovo is facing increasing concerns regarding workplace safety following a recent surge in injuries and, tragically, fatalities. The issue was addressed today on Klan Kosova with Jusuf Azemi, head of the Private Sector Union. Azemi expressed deep concern over the escalating situation, stating, “We have lost the battle for workplace safety.”
Over the past ten days, Azemi reported that two workers have died.
He attributed the problem to significant deficiencies within the construction sector. According to Azemi, the Central Labor Inspectorate has identified that approximately 50% of construction companies lack adequate safety equipment for their employees. “This tells us that we have not had any control, but we don’t have any now,” Azemi stated during his interview on Klan Kosova.
He emphasized the need for immediate action to address the systemic issues contributing to these preventable tragedies. Azemi indicated that a campaign to improve safety standards had been lacking, contributing to the current crisis. The incident underscores the critical importance of robust safety regulations and enforcement within Kosovo’s private sector.
Further investigation into the causes of these deaths and the implementation of effective preventative measures are now considered paramount.
