US-Iran agreement at risk – Israel refuses withdrawal from Lebanon

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, asserted that any temporary agreement between Tehran and Washington aimed at concluding the ongoing war is contingent upon Israel withdrawing from areas it has occupied within Lebanon. According to Araghchi, the conflict cannot be deemed entirely over without the physical removal of Israeli forces from the territories they captured during the hostilities. He explicitly stated, “Without the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territories it captured during this war, the war has not ended completely.”

This stated condition, however, conflicts with reports emerging from the United States side.

Media sources have cited an American official, who requested anonymity, indicating that the agreement being discussed between the US and Iran does not incorporate a requirement for the Israeli army’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory. The disagreement highlights a significant diplomatic impasse regarding the terms for de-escalation. While the Iranian delegation frames the withdrawal as a non-negotiable prerequisite for peace talks, the US position, as relayed by the official, suggests that the scope of the current negotiations does not mandate such a military withdrawal.

This divergence in prerequisites complicates efforts to establish a definitive end to the regional conflict involving Israel.
