The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) has suspended the use of drinking water from the Gostivar water supply system due to concerns regarding contamination and safety. Investigations revealed that an unauthorized pump had been illegally installed at the main junction of the water supply network. This installation was found to be directly injecting water from the Vardar River into the municipal water supply.
The incident has prompted significant public concern in Gostivar, with over 1,200 residents seeking medical attention at the General Hospital. Patients reported experiencing symptoms such as stomach aches and nausea. The AUV’s action followed a directive to conduct an extraordinary inspection at the water treatment plant located in the village of Vrutok, within the Gostivar Municipality.
This inspection was initiated following a notification received from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Gostivar. The contamination issue highlights significant lapses in the management and integrity of the local water infrastructure. Authorities are investigating the unauthorized connection to determine the source and extent of the contamination affecting the public water supply.
Residents are advised to use alternative, safe sources of drinking water until the full scope of the water quality assessment is completed and the system is deemed safe for consumption.
