Varoufakis Criticizes Kosovo’s Adoption of the Euro
Kosovo’s decision to adopt the Euro has drawn criticism from former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis. Speaking on Debat Plus, Varoufakis argued that the move was detrimental to Kosovo’s economic development. “I understand Kosovo’s motivations – political, security, or symbolic – for seeking EU membership,” Varoufakis stated.
“However, the adoption of the euro was not a suitable strategy for economic growth. No economy can thrive when reliant on another nation’s currency.”
Varoufakis cited the example of Iceland, a smaller country that successfully operated with its own currency. He asserted that the Euro’s implementation continues to present challenges for Kosovo’s economy.
“Kosovo did not need to accept the euro because for you it remains a problem even today,” he explained. The former finance minister suggested a potential alternative: “Financial institutions in Kosovo should explore the implementation of digital currency.” He noted the absence of established macroeconomic balances within the country.
