VW gives the alarm: ‘We need to fundamentally transform our business model’

Volkswagen Group Announces Extensive Restructuring, Targeting Significant Job Reductions

Volkswagen Group is undertaking a significant and comprehensive restructuring plan designed to adapt to evolving market conditions and address overcapacity. According to a recent letter to shareholders, the company anticipates eliminating approximately 50,000 jobs within its German operations over the next four years. This restructuring, as reported by Telegrafi, is part of a broader strategy to reduce the group’s workforce by the end of the decade.

CEO Oliver Blume outlined the plan, which also includes a reduction in global annual automobile production to nine million vehicles. This move is intended to mitigate potential oversupply following a period of substantial growth prior to the coronavirus pandemic. Historically, Volkswagen Group had consistently produced over 10 million vehicles annually, peaking at 11.3 million in 2018.

Production has since decreased to 8.9 million vehicles. The company acknowledges a shift in the automotive landscape and is proactively adjusting its operations. This restructuring gives the group the opportunity to streamline its operations and focus on future growth areas.

The reduction in production reflects a strategic response to recent market dynamics. It’s important to note that the company’s sales figures are currently being assessed.
