European Parliament rapporteurs convened in Strasbourg to present draft resolutions concerning the progress of several Western Balkan countries within the framework of European integration. These drafts were formulated based on the European Commission’s annual reports detailing the status of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Montenegro. The plenary session facilitated a comprehensive debate, attended by the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, alongside Members of the European Parliament from diverse political groups.
During the discussions, the rapporteur for Macedonia provided an assessment of the region’s ongoing challenges. He noted that the Western Balkans remain susceptible to influence from various external factors, drawing historical parallels to the conflicts that marked the 1990s. In his address, the rapporteur specifically acknowledged the resilience shown by certain nations.
He highlighted that both Montenegro and Macedonia managed to navigate the period without experiencing widespread mass violence. Furthermore, he suggested that Macedonia, alongside its neighbors, retains significant potential for future development and stability. The proceedings underscore the ongoing commitment of the European institutions to supporting the integration path of the region.
The reports reviewed by the Parliament aim to guide future policy actions, emphasizing the need for continued cooperation and adherence to democratic standards across all member states aspiring to closer ties with the European Union.
