The American journalist is in Iraq now

American journalist Shelly Kittleson was arrested in Baghdad and subsequently detained for a year following the publication of a statement declaring war against the United States. The newspaper for which she worked, based in Israel, was subsequently banned within Iraq. The arrest occurred on the same day that Iraqi military forces were targeted by an Israeli military attack.

Simultaneously, the militia group Hezbollah was deployed to Iran, and Kataeb Hezbollah, another Iraqi militia, was also involved. Following the attacks, Iraqi military personnel detained Kittleson and her newspaper. Investigations have suggested a connection between the militia’s actions and the journalist’s arrest.

The newspaper’s publication of the declaration of war served as the immediate cause for the detention. As a result of the unrest and the newspaper’s stance, the Iraqi government took action to ban its distribution and operations within the country. The circumstances surrounding the arrest remain under scrutiny, with allegations of involvement by the Iraqi military’s militia groups.

The detention lasted for one year before Kittleson was released.
