European Union Considers Reactivating Forgotten Defense Assistance Clause
The European Union is exploring the potential to reactivate a rarely used clause within the Treaty of the European Union that mandates mutual assistance in the event of an attack. Discussions are ongoing, with differing viewpoints but a possibility of collaboration. Following a late-night incident on March 2nd, sirens alerted residents of a small coastal village in Cyprus.
Shortly after, an explosion occurred. An Iranian drone, launched from Lebanon, targeted a British military base on the island. Two additional drones were intercepted in the final moments.
Several days later, President Nikos Christodoulides, who also serves as the President of the Council of the European Union, referenced Article 42, Paragraph 7 of the Treaty of the European Union, dating back to 2009. This provision stipulates that member states are obligated to provide assistance to one another in times of crisis. The specific circumstances surrounding the drone attack are currently under investigation.
