Kurti against new elections: Constitutional obligation

Kurti Reaffirms Constitutional Deadline for Kosovo Presidential Election

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti addressed the issue of the ongoing presidential election impasse during a government meeting, stressing the urgency of a resolution as a constitutional deadline nears. Kurti reiterated that early parliamentary elections are not a viable solution at this time. “We have a constitutional deadline that is approaching,” Kurti stated.

“I believe that going to early parliamentary elections is not an option.” He emphasized that the selection of a president falls squarely within the responsibility of the elected representatives of the people. Kurti highlighted the need for political will and a willingness to compromise to overcome the current stalemate. “The election of the president is a constitutional duty of the elected representatives of the people, this requires a will for a solution, willingness for compromise and difficult decisions,” he explained.

The Prime Minister indicated that no single political party possesses the authority to unilaterally resolve the situation. Discussions are ongoing, with Kurti emphasizing the importance of adhering to the established constitutional framework and pursuing a path towards a functional outcome. The focus remains on securing the election of a president before the approaching constitutional deadline.
