LDK and Kurti Agree Not to Further Meetings Amidst Presidential Election Standoff
Kosovo’s Democratic League (LDK) leader, Lumir Abdixhiku, concluded a meeting with Prime Minister Albin Kurti within the Assembly of Kosovo following discussions surrounding the election of the country’s president. The one-hour meeting resulted in an agreement to discontinue further scheduled meetings. Abdixhiku stated that the LDK remains committed to preparing for potential new elections if a political resolution regarding the president’s selection cannot be achieved.
He emphasized the LDK’s established position that the head of state should not be a direct extension of the current government. “We must prepare for the scenario of new and extraordinary elections,” Abdixhiku declared. “From the beginning, the LDK has been clear that the president should not be an extension of the government.
There should not be a government that has both a president and a party leader.”
The meeting occurred as negotiations continue regarding the process for electing Kosovo’s next president. Prime Minister Kurti and the LDK maintain differing views on the appropriate selection process, fueling the ongoing debate. The possibility of extraordinary elections remains a significant point of contention.
