The Smart car is finally still small.

Smart Reintroduces Iconic ForTwo Spirit with New 2 Model

Marka Smart has significantly evolved since the 2019 establishment of a 50/50 joint venture with Mercedes and Geely, resulting in a complete shift in production and vehicle design. Current manufacturing exclusively occurs within China, and the company’s models are now considerably larger and heavier compared to earlier iterations. The brand’s current lineup includes a diverse range of SUVs, alongside a limousine nearly equivalent in length to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The recently launched smart 2 represents a successful return to the brand’s heritage, effectively reviving the design ethos of the original ForTwo. Designed by Mercedes-Benz, the new two-door hatchback deliberately references the iconic model, which debuted in 1999 and underwent three generations before its discontinuation in 2024. Previous smart cars offered both gasoline and diesel engine options.

The smart 2 finally brings back the spirit of the original ForTwo, both in its aesthetic and overall design. This new car demonstrates a commitment to honoring the brand’s legacy while adapting to contemporary market demands.
