University of Münster to Launch Faculty of Islamic Theology
The University of Münster, located in western Germany, will inaugurate a Faculty of Islamic Theology in July, as announced by Rector Johannes Wessels. The development marks a significant step for the institution and the Muslim community it serves. During a press conference held on Wednesday, founding Dean Mouhanad Khorchide emphasized the importance of the new faculty.
“This represents a recognition of the Muslim community and establishes a framework for academic dialogue,” he stated, according to reports from Telegrafi. The university has previously operated a Center for Islamic Theology within the Faculty of Philology since 2011, focusing on the training of religious educators. The newly established Faculty of Islamic Theology will gain the autonomy to award doctoral diplomas and manage its own examination boards.
Rector Wessels confirmed that funding for the initiative has been secured. This expansion reflects the university’s commitment to fostering interfaith understanding and providing a dedicated space for the study of Islamic theology. The creation of this faculty underscores the University of Münster’s dedication to academic diversity and engagement with religious perspectives.
