Western Balkans Face Declining Media Freedom, Kosovo Shows Progress
The 25th Global Press Freedom Index, published by Reporterët pa Kufij (RSF), reveals a concerning global trend of deteriorating conditions for journalism. Across 180 countries and territories, 100 have experienced a decline in press freedom scores, highlighting a significant challenge to media independence worldwide. Within the Western Balkans, the overall picture indicates a general decline in media freedom.
With the exception of Kosovo, which has recorded positive advancements, the region faces persistent difficulties in safeguarding journalistic freedom. Kosovo’s progress is notable, achieving a ranking of 84th within the Global Press Freedom Index – a 15-position improvement compared to the previous year. This represents a positive step for media freedom within the countries of the Balkans.
However, the index underscores the need for continued efforts to protect and promote journalistic independence across the region.
