Deputy Head Haxhiu Commemorates 27th Anniversary of Faculty Massacre
Prishtina, Kosovo – Albulena Haxhiu, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Kosovo, attended the Memorial Academy to mark the 27th anniversary of the Massacre at the Faculty of Studies. The event honored the victims of the tragic incident that occurred on May 2, 1999. During her address, Haxhiu detailed the events of that day, stating that 116 Albanian civilians lost their lives within a two-hour period.
These individuals, including children, young people, women, men, and elderly residents, were captured while attempting to evacuate from besieged villages in the Shala region, passing through Slakovets and Ceceli, and ultimately heading towards Studime and Vushtri. They were part of a column of deportees seeking refuge from Serbian forces. Haxhiu emphasized that the actions were part of a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing and violence.
“An entire state had turned its military, police, and paramilitary apparatus into a machine of ethnic cleansing and killings and genocide,” she stated. The anniversary serves as a solemn reminder of the events surrounding the massacre, and Haxhiu’s participation underscored the ongoing commitment to remembrance and accountability.
