Kosovo Celebrates World Press Freedom Day with Focus on Journalist Wellbeing
Kosovo will observe World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, a date established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. The day recognizes the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the vital role of the press in democratic societies. This year’s observance is being spearheaded by the Association of Kosovo Journalists, who are hosting a panel discussion centered on “The Impact of the Profession on the Mental Health of Media Workers.” The event aims to address growing concerns regarding the psychological challenges faced by journalists.
Kosovo’s ranking in the annual World Press Freedom Index continues to evolve. Currently positioned at 84th place out of 180 countries, this represents an improvement from its 99th position in 2026. Data from “Reporters Without Borders” indicates a positive trend, with Kosovo achieving 78th place in their 2018 report – a rise from 82nd in 2017.
The ongoing efforts to improve this ranking highlight the importance of safeguarding world press freedom and supporting the crucial work of journalists. The focus on mental health underscores the need for continued support and resources within the media landscape. This press freedom day emphasizes the ongoing commitment to a free and independent media in Kosovo.
