Mucunski: We are developing discussions so that the implementation of the EES will be halted for the Western Balkans during the summer period

EU Member States Exploring Flexibility on EES Implementation for Western Balkans

Timço Mucunski, the Foreign Minister and Minister of Trade of the Republic of North Macedonia (RMV), has indicated a growing willingness among European Union member states to address concerns regarding the implementation of the European Area of Entry and Exit (EES) within the Western Balkans. Speaking to “Lokalno,” Mucunski detailed ongoing high-level discussions initiated during the summer months aimed at potentially delaying the EES rollout. He stated, “What can be shared is that we are developing high-level talks, both at the technical and administrative level, and that there is a willingness from the member states of the EU to show flexibility towards the region.”

These discussions involve collaboration with regional countries, particularly concerning border crossings.

Mucunski emphasized the complexities presented by terrestrial borders, noting that the current system isn’t adequately suited for the region’s specific circumstances. The talks, conducted at both technical and administrative levels, represent an effort to find solutions that accommodate the unique challenges faced by Western Balkan nations during the EES implementation process. Mucunski’s comments suggest a shift towards a more collaborative approach between the EU and its neighbors.
