Spanish Authorities Seize Record Quantity of Cocaine in Atlantic
Spanish police have seized a significant amount of cocaine from a cargo ship in international waters off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Authorities estimate the total quantity recovered to be between 30,000 and 45,000 kilograms, representing what is believed to be a record for national seizures. The operation, conducted by the Civil Guard, involved the interception of the vessel near the Spanish Canary Islands on Friday.
Approximately 20 individuals were arrested during the incident, according to the AUGC, the main union for the Agrupación de Unidades de Guardia (AUGC) organization. The ship was traveling from Sierra Leone and was headed towards Libya when it was stopped. The AUGC described the action as a “historic blow against drug trafficking.”
Legal restrictions have prevented the Civil Guard from releasing specific details regarding the investigation.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed the seizure was “one of the largest, not only at the national level,” highlighting its importance in combating transnational organized crime. Further details are pending official statements from the Civil Guard.
