Hoxha: Albania will not extend the migrant agreement with Italy after 2030.

Albania Announces Timeline for End to Migration Agreement with Italy

Albania has stated it will not extend its current agreement with Italy on migration beyond 2030, according to an exclusive interview with Euractiv by Albanian Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha. The agreement, initially ratified at the beginning of 2024, currently outlines a framework for managing migrant flows between the two nations. The Italian government is utilizing the ports of Gazela and Shengjin as temporary detention centers for migrants awaiting asylum adjudication within Italy.

This practice is part of a wider European strategy to physically relocate migrants away from initial points of arrival. The five-year agreement’s future is now subject to Albanian considerations, particularly as the country prepares to seek membership in the European Union. Minister Hoxha emphasized that “First of all, the agreement is for five years.” A short extension would be necessary to maintain the arrangement just months before Albania’s own EU accession process.

The arrangement has generated political and legal scrutiny. The Albanian government’s decision not to extend the agreement reflects a strategic alignment with its own national priorities and future ambitions. It’s important to note that the agreement is not indefinite, and its conclusion in 2030 remains firmly established.
