New Probation Law Aims for Modernized Justice System in North Macedonia

North Macedonia has introduced a revised probation law, aiming to establish a more contemporary and effective system for managing individuals under probation measures. Justice Minister Igor Filkov outlined the key objectives of the new legislation during a public debate held today at the Academy of Sciences and Arts of North Macedonia (ASHAM). The debate, organized by the Penal and Criminology Society of North Macedonia, the Strategic Research Center affiliated with ASHAM, and the Macedonian Penal Society, focused on the Probation Law Project-proposal.

Minister Filkov emphasized the strengthened role of the probation service and improvements to the overall organization of sanction execution. “We are establishing a more modern, efficient, and just framework,” Filkov stated. He highlighted that the new legal framework incorporates high standards for human rights and includes provisions for the creation of a registry.

Filkov, through this new law, intends to ensure a more streamlined and equitable process for those subject to probation. The initiative reflects a commitment to refining the justice system within North Macedonia.
