“Safe City” will also capture foreign license plates

The Macedonian Ministry of Interior has announced an impending update to the “Safe City” system, which will incorporate the tracking of vehicles bearing foreign license plates within the next month. Minister of Interior, Pançe Toshkovski, stated that the system improvements are ongoing, emphasizing that necessary work remains to address current deficiencies in issuing fines to drivers operating vehicles with foreign plates. Currently, the system registers violations for foreign vehicles automatically based solely on the vehicle’s license plate number.

This automated process continues even if the identity of the driver or the status of the fine payment is unknown, as the existing infrastructure is limited to recognizing vehicle identification plates. In terms of recorded activity, the MPB reported that the “Safe City” system had logged 33,722 violations originating from foreign vehicles over a three-month period. Data for May alone showed 11,258 recorded cases.

Toshkovski indicated that the forthcoming updates aim to enhance enforcement capabilities beyond mere vehicle identification. The modifications are expected to improve the process for ticketing and accountability concerning all vehicles, particularly those displaying foreign license plates. The ministry stressed that these upgrades are crucial for refining the accuracy and completeness of traffic violation records associated with both domestic and foreign registrations.
