Rokas: The landfill in Strugë poses a direct risk to the environment; urgent measures are needed

During his inspection of the Struga landfill, EU Ambassador Michalis Rokas voiced significant concerns regarding the site’s current operational status and its proximity to several vital areas. Specifically, Rokas highlighted the landfill’s proximity to residential neighborhoods, the Drini i Zi river, the local water supply system, and Lake Ohrid. He assessed that the environmental issue posed by the site is substantial.

According to the Ambassador, relying solely on the development of the long-term regional waste management system in Novaci is insufficient given the immediate risks. Rokas stressed that the current situation demands urgent measures because the landfill is situated in an area that poses direct threats to the local environment and the quality of life for nearby citizens. While the European Union supports the development of comprehensive regional solid waste treatment infrastructure, the completion of this necessary process remains pending.

In response to the critical nature of the situation, Rokas announced that discussions would be held with relevant local authorities and institutions. These talks aim to determine actionable steps that can be implemented immediately to mitigate risks while the comprehensive regional solution is finalized.

  1. The proximity of the landfill to both residential areas and the Drini i Zi river is deeply concerning and requires immediate environmental action.
