Zulfaj: Blockade in Parliament risks the loss of nearly 60 million euros from the EU Growth Plan

Blockades within the Kosovo Parliament are reportedly impeding the necessary reforms, raising concerns that the implementation of the EU Growth Plan could result in the loss of approximately 60 million euros. These concerns were raised during the inaugural meeting of the EU-Kosovo Monitoring Committee for the Reform and Growth Instrument, where officials reviewed the status of the Reform Agenda and the general progress within the European Union’s overarching growth plan for the Western Balkans. Jeton Zulfaj, the National Coordinator for the Reform and Growth Instrument in Kosovo, stated that the country was among the first in the region to successfully finalize negotiations with the European Union concerning the Growth Plan reforms during the summer of 2024.

According to Zulfaj, the Kosovo Government had initially approved the Reform Agenda without delay on April 9, 2024. However, the momentum of the reform process has since slowed due to subsequent procedural delays. The monitoring committee meeting focused on bridging the gap between the agreed-upon reform timeline and the actual legislative progress.

The discussions underscored the importance of maintaining momentum to secure the full financial backing intended for the nation’s development goals. The committee stressed that overcoming these political hurdles is crucial for Kosovo to fully benefit from the structural support mechanisms designed to stimulate economic growth across the region. The ongoing coordination between local authorities and the EU remains central to the successful execution of the agreed-upon plan.
