12 years since the establishment of the “Peace Park”

On September 18, 2014, approximately two years after the removal of a barricade over the main Mitrovica bridge, Serbs from the northern section reestablished a blockade using a structure termed “Peace Park.” Goran Rakiq, the Mayor of Northern Mitrovica, stated that this action of re-blocking the vital crossing was being coordinated in full with the Serbian government. Marko Gjuriq, who serves as the head of the Serbian government office for Kosovo, was reportedly present throughout the activity. Notably, a large police presence did not attempt to prevent the erection of the blockade.

Following the establishment of the northern park, the mayor of the northern sector extended an invitation to his counterpart in the south, Agim Bahtiri, suggesting that the southern portion of the bridge also be transformed into a similar park area. This situation remained in place until August 14, 2016, when the “Peace Park” was eventually removed from the crossing. The dismantling of the blockade occurred subsequent to the implementation of a formal agreement between the relevant parties, marking a significant change to the physical structure of the bridge and the area surrounding the park.
