In Switzerland, the calculation of automobile insurance premiums is heavily influenced by an individual’s age and residency status, factors frequently cited as the most determining variables. A recent comparative analysis conducted by the portal “bonus.ch,” and reported by the Swiss newspaper “20 Minuten,” has illuminated significant disparities in current insurance pricing across major providers. The data reveals that certain demographic groups face substantially higher costs.
Specifically, the analysis highlights a pronounced pricing disadvantage for young people of Kosovar origin. According to the figures published, an 18-year-old possessing a permanent residence permit (C visa) in Switzerland and identifying with Kosovar origin pays, on average, 63 percent more for basic car insurance compared to a peer with Swiss citizenship. This disparity becomes even more pronounced when considering comprehensive coverage.
For the same demographic group, the cost differential reaches a staggering 174 percent increase for full coverage. These established price variances have become widely recognized issues within the Swiss automotive sector. The findings suggest that while age and residency are primary determinants, ethnic background, as represented by the origin noted in the study, introduces a significant additional variable into the insurance cost structure for young drivers.
