Iran says it held a “short discussion” with the US on the nuclear issue

Iran stated on Monday that it engaged in a “brief discussion” with the United States concerning its nuclear program during talks held in Switzerland. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei clarified that substantive negotiations on the matter had not commenced. According to foreign media reporting relayed by Telegrafi, Baqaei indicated that “one of the points raised by the American delegation was its stance on the nuclear issue.” He further specified that while a “very brief discussion took place regarding the nuclear issue,” there was no detailed discussion, and therefore, it could not be characterized as the start of negotiations.

This statement provides nuance to reports suggesting high-level talks on the program. Separately, earlier reports indicated that Iran and the United States reached an agreement on Monday to establish communication channels. The purpose of these lines is to ensure the continued safety and passage through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

The exchange suggests ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations across several critical geopolitical areas, despite the limited scope confirmed regarding the nuclear issue.
