Nationalist messages from Belgrade: Serbian gendarmerie sings about Kosovo before Vučić

Serbian gendarmerie members recently performed a song with nationalist themes concerning Kosovo during an event attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić. The piece, titled “Anthem of the Heroes of Kosovo,” is described as a Serbian patriotic song commemorating the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. Previously, this song served as the anthem for the Joint Special Operations Unit (JSO), also known as the “Red Berets.”

The performance included verses such as, “We are setting off for Kosovo,” and the lyrics reportedly contain religious and nationalist references tied to the Serbian narrative regarding the region.

The JSO was a specialized unit of the Serbian State Security that operated during the 1990s and was involved in the Kosovo conflict. Furthermore, this unit has been referenced in ongoing judicial proceedings. The event highlighted the continued cultural and political focus on Kosovo within the Serbian context, utilizing the performance of this particular patriotic song.
