The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) announced on Tuesday that it conducted raids across four countries as part of an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of European Union funds. The raids target the former far-right political group, Identity and Democracy (ID), within the European Parliament. According to the EPPO, the operation is part of an ongoing inquiry into how the former group utilized EU funds between 2019 and 2024.
Following the 2024 elections, the ID group was officially dissolved and has since been replaced by a new political grouping called Patriots for Europe. This successor coalition comprises Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from various euroskeptic parties, including France’s National Rally (RN), Italy’s Lega, and Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD). The raids were executed by authorities as part of the broader investigation into the financial management of the former political entity.
Jordan Bardella, president of the RN and the head of the Patriots group, commented on the development via X on the morning the raids took place. The EPPO’s actions indicate a formal scrutiny of the financial transactions associated with the former parliamentary group concerning the allocation and use of EU funds.
