Berlin “dresses” in the colors of the American flag for Independence Day

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was illuminated with the red, white, and blue colors of the American flag on Saturday evening to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. The light display commenced at sunset and continued until midnight. Berlin’s borough president, Kai Wegner, stated that the Brandenburg Gate, as a symbol of unity and freedom, strongly reflects shared values on July 4th.

In a statement, he added that Berlin extends warm congratulations to the United States on its 250th anniversary. Furthermore, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul noted that the anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence is an occasion for celebration for Europe, Germany, and particularly Berlin. He emphasized that the principles enshrined within the Declaration of Independence provided a foundation for Germany.

The display highlighted the connection between the monument and the shared democratic ideals celebrated by the American nation.
