Koci: Serbia has increased controls on Kosovars, beware – phones are also being checked

Lawyer Arianit Koci has publicly demanded that all detentions or arrests of Kosovar citizens by Serbian authorities be made public and immediately reported to the appropriate institutions. Koci issued this warning following a noticeable increase in checks targeting Kosovars. His statement was prompted by the recent arrest of Avdi Memçaj.

Memçaj has been detained at the Belgrade Central Jail since May 20th, following his apprehension at the Merdare border crossing. The detention stemmed from suspicions that he had incited hatred through a social media post. According to Koci, Memçaj’s family had refrained from making the case public for several weeks.

This caution, they explained, was due to concerns that media exposure might generate additional pressure or adverse consequences for other family members. Koci has since assumed the role of legal defense counsel for Memçaj. He emphasized that transparency regarding such incidents is crucial for addressing the current situation involving Kosovars.

The lawyer’s call underscores a growing concern over the visibility and documentation of interactions between Kosovars and Serbian authorities.
