Haxhiu: Kosovo must be given the path for EU membership negotiations

The President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, recently met with the permanent rapporteur for the European Parliament concerning Kosovo, MEP Riho Terras. During the meeting, Haxhiu addressed the ongoing European perspective of the country, emphasizing the necessity of advancing Kosovo’s bid for European Union membership. Haxhiu stressed that the process for Kosovo’s EU application should not encounter further postponements.

She stated unequivocally, “Kosovo’s application for membership in the European Union must be addressed without further delay, and the country’s progress must be evaluated on the basis of merit.”

According to the President, Kosovo is advocating for procedural fairness rather than special considerations. Haxhiu clarified that the nation is not requesting an exception to established criteria but rather a consistent and equitable process. She explained that such a fair process is crucial for paving the way for Kosovo to achieve candidate status and commence formal membership negotiations within the European framework.

The discussion underscored the Albanian leadership’s commitment to adhering to the standards set by the European Union. By framing the request around meritocracy, Haxhiu aimed to shift the focus toward tangible progress and adherence to established European benchmarks. This dialogue highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts by Kosovo to solidify its path toward deeper integration with the European political and economic structures.
